What are the risks of physical restraints in elder nursing homes?

On Behalf of | Nov 11, 2024 | Elder Law |

When we commit our elderly loved ones to nursing homes, we do so in the hope that they can receive the care and support they need to improve their quality of life. However, there might be times when they need restraints to prevent them from harming themselves or others.

Nursing homes may employ different types of restraints, such as physical restraints like belts or vests, as well as chemical restraints involving medications to sedate residents. However, the use of physical restraints can lead to significant risks, including the following.

Frustration and confusion

When an elderly resident is physically restrained, they may experience heightened frustration and confusion. This can arise from the sudden loss of independence and the inability to move freely, which can be distressing for individuals who may not fully understand why they are being restrained.

Muscle atrophy and pressure sores

Due to long periods of immobility caused by physical restraints, residents may suffer from muscle atrophy and the development of pressure sores. Limited movement can weaken muscles and reduce physical strength, making it more difficult for individuals to regain their mobility once the restraints are removed. Pressure sores may also develop on bony prominences where constant pressure is applied, leading to painful injuries that require medical treatment.

Loss of dignity

A restrained patient may feel a significant loss of dignity and autonomy. Being physically restrained can create a sense of helplessness and reduce their self-esteem, as they may perceive themselves as being treated like a child rather than an adult. This loss of dignity can have lasting effects on their mental and emotional health, further isolating them from the social interactions that are vital for their well-being.

If you feel that your loved one is being unnecessarily restrained against their wishes, consider seeking legal guidance to understand your options and the rights of your loved one.
